I remember growing up and doing a 24-hour fast at my church. The fast was typically associated with fundraising for those who were in need. I very rarely heard about fasting otherwise. I do remember my mom once talked about praying and fasting for a day when she was praying for someone who was not doing well. That was my experience with fasting.

This passage has many aspects that we have probably heard a hundred different sermons on. There is the taking up of the cross, the naming of who Jesus is, and the revelation of his crucifixion. For me, today, I am dwelling on the start of this passage where Jesus is praying alone.

We posture and perform for others to gain their good opinion, and we hoard our resources to protect ourselves from uncertainty. Often, it feels easier to cling to the illusion of security than to admit how fragile our lives actually are.
